Components of the electric control hydraulic system?

I would like to build an electrically controlled hydraulic elevator and press. I would first like to know how much horsepower is needed for an electric motor to drive the pump required for the hydraulic actuator. I understand the power of a diesel engine is sufficient to achieve this goal. Secondly, I was told that electricity hydralic controlled are considered non-flexible because the actuator (cylinder) must be comletely front or back, unlike the incremental changes, such as movement a forklift. Is it bad, I sure hope so. So what are the components of an electrically controlled hydraulic system and what is their function to the whole system. My main objective is how to accomplish the hydraulic control valves, is that valves determine which side gets the oil cylinder. I realize hydraulics have enormous power and be able to control electrically lead to effective management or remote management.
